The Community Garden, a program of Franciscan Ministries, Inc., has provided gardening opportunities for the benefit of the community since 2009. Located on the grounds of St. Clare Convent, the Garden is host to 80 gardeners, many of whom are recent immigrants and refugees. It is a large vibrant community garden with plots averaging 20 x 20 feet.
In addition to individual plots, we host communal gardens and an educational garden. In recent years, the community has added bee hives, blue bird houses, a perennial vegetable garden, and a perennial flower garden. Our community crop plots are planted for distribution to local non-profit agencies. Since 2009, we have donated over 12,000 pounds of produce.
The majority of our plots are typically assigned in early Spring, but gardener applications are accepted to a wait-list year-round to fill plots if they come available mid-season Plots may be farmed by individuals, families, or community groups. All gardeners are asked to contribute volunteer hours to the common garden through work days, general garden projects and maintenance, or in our food distribution network.
